Day 32: Square

Roy Lichtenstein
Kiss V

Isn't it funny that all the kiss paintings are square?

Day 29: Timeless

Alphonse Mucha
Job (Cigarette Papers Poster)

Mucha is definitely one of my favorite artists. Here's to something that will never go out of style.

Day 27: Glow

Rembrandt van Rijn
The Company of captain Frans Banning Cocq
and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch preparing to march out
aka The Nightwatch
1642

A part of this project that is for the most part invisible to the viewer is the selection of an image of the original painting. In this painting particularly, though, the variables in selecting the representation were more dramatic.

The Night Watch is a misnomer, because dirt and egg varnish made the painting appear darker, a night scene, until it was later restored by historians.
Also, the painting was cropped at some point in it's history.

I chose the cropped version because that is what you can see today in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The dark version was chosen because "The Night Watch" is a far better known title than the mouthful above.

Day 4: Lost

Van Gogh
Starry Night
1889

There's really no good way in the format of this blog to get the essence of Van Gogh. Minimalism has its uses, but I wouldn't say physicality is one of them.

Day 3: Napping spot

Edward Hopper
Rooms by the Sea
1951

I'm not sure if this is one of Hopper's more famous paintings, unlike Nighthawks, but it's a painting I've always loved from the Yale Art Gallery collection.

Day 1: Drive

 Katsushika Hokusai
The Great Wave off Kanagawa

Day 0: New Beginnings

So begins another adventure.

This is a daily design blog. Each day I'm making a minimalist representation of classical paintings.
The rules:
don't overthink
create, create, create
